Paxton Shiraz 2018 McLaren Vale at 13.99 bottle No added preservatives Organic, Vegan & Gluten Free. Paxton is one of a kind. This organic and biodynamic winery was set up in 1979 by one of Australia’s best known viticulturalists, David Paxton. The winery, based in McLaren Vale, consists of over 200 acres of premium vineyards, making it Australia’s largest organic and biodynamic estate. No sulphur dioxide or preservatives were added in the making of this wine therefore it should be drunk young and fresh. It’s a deep, dark, virtually opaque purple-red colour in the glass. The nose is superb alluring with rich plums, berry fruits, spice and a savoury earthiness. This blockbuster of a wine doesn’t stop there, in the mouth its big and bold with a massive amount of fruit intensity and a lovely lingering finish.
Château Mayne Blanc 2015 Lussac Saint-Emilion at 18.99 bottle.Lussac Saint-Emilion is the most northerly of the satellites of the larger Saint-Emilion appellation, which is located in the right bank Libournais district of Bordeaux. The Château Mayne Blanc’s vineyard is situated at the highest elevation of Lussac Saint Emilion, atop clay and silty soils which impart softness to the wines. The vines are sustainably cultivated, with grass sown between the vine rows in order to stabilise the soil and decompress it, sending the vine’s roots deep into the soils. The yields are carefully controlled in order to concentrate the flavours in the berries. Plump berried fruits are accompanied by a blueberry character and rich, dark chocolate notes. Stylish and deliciously approachable with soft tannins and a fresh finish.
Caves D’Esclans Whispering Angel 2018 Cotes De Provence Rosé at 19.99 bottle. Chateau d’Esclans is a fantastic property with an insanely grand house near La Motte (the granny flat has five bedrooms), and produces what many believe are the world’s best rosé wines. The man behind the project is Sacha Lichine, son of the writer and vigneron Alexis, and until 1999 the proprietor of Margaux’s Chateau Prieure-Lichine. Since 1999, Sacha has been building up Domaines Sacha Lichine with d’Esclans as the jewel in the crown. Everything is done with quality as the overriding focus. Sacha is very proud to say he takes the same care and attention of his grapes as any of the top Bordeaux chateaux do of theirs, and no expense is spared to ensure every vintage reaches its potential in the bottle. The wines themselves are made by Patrick Leon, who used to make the wine at none other than Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and Opus One. Not a bad CV! Pale pink in colour, it has flavours of redcurrant, dried flowers and spices on the nose, with a subtle herbal quality. Dry, with red fruit flavours, it has a firm finish with lingering herbal notes.
Zensa Primitivo 2018 Puglia at 11.99 bottle. Organic & Vegan. Zensa Primitivo is made by Alessandro Michelon of Orion Wines, he is one of Italy's most innovative and promising winemakers with a profound knowledge of Italian.Together with Luca Pomaro he works closely with their growers to produce wines from indigenous grapes that express the typicity of the region. Zensa means "without" or "to do without" in Italian, and this superb organic Primitivo is made without pesticides and fertilisers. The grapes are sourced from organic vineyards in Puglia where the vines are grown as free-standing bush vines. 100% Primitivo grapes are harvested by hand into small wooden crates. The crates are then placed in aerated lofts for 2 to 3 weeks to dry the grapes out. During this process, known as Appassimento [a process famously used to produce the far more costly Amarone wines], the grapes lose about 30% of their weight. This means that the flavours, aromas and natural sweetness are all much more concentrated than in standard wine production. A big, poweful dark red colour, aromas of plums, black cherries, chocolate, dried fruit and slight herbaceous notes. Plum and spice flavours on the palate follow through to the long, full finish superb.
